Saint Lawrence is one of the more popular saints of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. He was especially known as a model deacon and champion of the poor. Under the Emperor Valerian, he was arrested and instructed to turn over the treasures of the church. When summoned three days later to produce this treasure, he presented the poor to the Roman prefect, whereupon he was suffered a martyr’s death
